Instructions
1. Knead the dough ingredients well by hand or machine, then cover and let rise in a warm place for at least 30 minutes.
2. Then divide the dough into 3 equal parts and roll each one out into a rectangle.
3. Spread the rolled-out doughs with Nutella or hazelnut spread, dust with sweetened cocoa powder, then scatter sour cherries over them.
4. The sour cherries can be fresh, jarred, or frozen. It's important that they're thawed and squeezed free of their juice, so they don't make the dough soggy.
5. Roll up each filled dough piece to get 3 strands, then braid the kalács with a three-strand braid.
6. Place it in a parchment-lined pan, cover, and let it rise for about another 60 minutes.
7. Then brush the kalács with egg, place it in an oven preheated to 180 °C (350 °F), then bake at 165 °C (330 °F) for about 35–40 minutes until done.
8. Let it cool completely, then slice and serve.
